Default CubCrafters Introduces New Flagship Panel

    Press Release

CUBCRAFTERS INTRODUCES NEW FLAGSHIP PANEL at SUN ‘n FUN
Executive GLASS touch Features New Garmin 10.6” Touch Display

Yakima, Washington – March 25, 2014: Light aircraft designer and manufacturer CubCrafters will display a new top-of-the-line instrument panel at Sun ‘n Fun in cooperation with Garmin, which is simultaneously introducing their G3X™ Touch 10.6” touch-sensitive flight display system. CubCrafters’ new panel, Executive GLASS touch, replaces the company’s previous high-end panel with an integrated suite of Garmin’s cutting-edge instruments. Executive GLASS touch is available immediately in CubCrafters Carbon Cub SS, Carbon Cub EX and Sport Cub S2 aircraft. Sun ‘n Fun attendees can see the new panel in CubCrafters’ Booth 92.

“We’re pleased that Garmin has chosen CubCrafters as their OEM partner for this debut”, says Randy Lervold, CubCrafters’ General Manager. “Our Light Sport Aircraft have the best-in-class fit, finish, performance and quality. Together with Garmin’s newest touch-sensitive flight display technology, CubCrafters’ models offer the best-in-class avionics.”

Executive GLASS touch is centered on Garmin’s brand new G3X™ Touch flight display system that includes the GDU 465 10.6” high-resolution touchscreen display. Along with the Garmin GTR 200 COMM and GTX 23 ES mode S transponder, the system integrates each of Garmin’s instruments for a logical, intuitive pilot interface. The G3X Touch has Synthetic Vision and video input for cameras or Enhanced Vision Systems. The display layout is completely configurable and includes a front-loading SD™ card slot for convenient software and database updates.

CubCrafters also includes Garmin’s Angle-of-Attack (AOA) sensor and Sirius XM™ Satellite Radio weather and audio as standard equipment on the Executive GLASS touch panel.

“Garmin’s big, new display and pilot interface are very exciting”, says Lervold. “Even with our Cub’s classic roots, our customers demand the most up-to-date instrumentation and avionics available. Executive GLASS touch represents Garmin’s newest and best ideas.”

Executive GLASS touch is available as an option in CubCrafters’ ready-to-fly LSA aircraft for $24,990. Experimental Amateur Builders can purchase the panel for $27,990. Buyers may also upgrade the panel to include Garmin’s Dual-Axis Autopilot at $4,990, and Garmin GDL 39R ADS-B datalink at $2,100.

Nice. Any way to have ADS-B out?

The transponder is Mose S, Extended Squitter (ES). Presuming the GX3's gps outputs the correct data elements/syntax, then ADS-B out should work, at least until 2020. After that, the GPS source has to be TSO'd (as of the current rules).

That's correct. The GTX 23 ES transponder includes Extended Squitter technology. What’s missing is a certified GPS source. Garmin’s GDL 88 may be added to the panel, and it will provide the certified GPS source for ADS-B “Out” as well as ADS-B “In” weather and traffic for 2020 compliance.

A lot may happen with ADS-B in the next few years, and a less expensive certified GPS source will likely become available. For those who want to enjoy ADS-B “In” weather and traffic now, we suggest adding Garmin’s GDL 39 R to the panel. It’s available as an installed upgrade for $2,100.

John... My understanding is that for the period between now and 1/1/2020, one doesn't need a certified GPS source, so long as the source you do use speaks the right language for the transponder. This would allow the ground stations to receive your data and broadcast back to you (instead of just catching the broadcast sent to someone nearby). Is this how you understand the rule, as well?

Yes, that's my understanding as well. Further, we've installed and flown G3X panels with the GDL 39R (before the new Touch, and without a certified GPS)... ADS-B weather and traffic works very well.

I note that the new panel includes AOA. Will that require a specific pitot tube with three rather than the usual two lines?

For those of us currently building wings just reaching that part where those lines are to be installed, any suggestions on assuring compatibility should we decide to go with this new panel?

Another question. If one were not interested in the autopilot freeing up space on the left side of the panel, would that space be sufficient for an altimeter and air speed indicator? I really like the idea of a little back up should there be a panel failure.

Yes, you'll need to use Garmin's pitot tube and omit the standard tube in the jury strut.
